Hello friends! I understand that some of you may not understand the meaning behind astrology or how it works. Since I absolutely love astrology and find it very helpful in my everyday life, I thought I might try to share that love with some of you. You probably know your zodiac sign and given characteristics, but you may not understand why those characteristics pertain to you. The most frequent comment I hear when I ask people about their astrology sign is “I can see that I have some of the characteristics, but they’re so general they could apply to anyone”. Considering a person can display different characteristics from day to day depending on certain experiences and circumstances, you might believe in the previous statement. However, if you try to pinpoint your most common behavioral patterns throughout your entire life and compare it to your sign then you will probably start to see some sort of correlation. Why does it matter? Knowledge of the self can help you understand why you do certain things and act in certain ways. Once you gain this awareness, you can gain more control over yourself and the direction you want your life to go in. And who doesn’t want to be the author of their own life?

Usually when you look at your horoscopes, you are looking at your sun sign. This sign is determined by the sun’s position when you’re born, but if you dive a little deeper into astrology you’ll find that you also have a moon sign and an ascendant sign. The sun sign describes your character’s essential qualities, while the moon sign symbolizes your inner self, or the part of you that responds from instinct and feelings. The ascendant sign, or rising sign, is the sign that is rising over the Eastern sky at the time and place of your birth. This sign changes every two hours; so the exact time and place of your birth are needed to determine your rising sign. Ascendant signs explain how other people might see you; this is important considering that how we see ourselves and how others see us can vary immensely. You just so happen to be a conglomerate of behavioral patterns, personality traits, and energies that these signs facilitate. The fact that you have three different signs explains why people born under the same sign are not exactly the same. One person may display their moon sign characteristics, while another person may display their sun sign characteristics more. This also explains why some people do not think their horoscope correlates with their personality; they may be looking at the wrong sign, or not adding up all of the pieces.

All of these factors make up your personality, but it doesn’t stop there. The positions of the other planets during the time of birth also affect one’s psyche. Each planet has their own energy and affects our lives differently. For example, Venus rules love and attraction, while Pluto rules power and transformation. The positions of the planets affect our everyday lives and are always changing because the planets are always changing positions in our sky. The planets may affect each person in a different way considering where the planets are located in one’s natal chart. So what is a natal chart? It’s an astrological diagram depicting all of the planets’ positions at the exact time of someone’s birth; basically, a blueprint of someone’s personality. Understanding where and how these planets affect you can be incredibly helpful for someone on their path to self-discovery. I highly recommend studying your own natal chart to further your self-knowledge. Many websites online will create one free of charge. I recommend using Cafeastrology.com, but there are many more you can find on google. This type of information can help you determine your strengths, weaknesses, career path, talents, and good times to make big decisions. I consider my natal chart to be an extremely insightful guide, and use it on a daily basis.

Considering how large planets are, there’s no wonder their gravitational pull can affect our bodies and psyche. These celestial bodies have been used for thousands of years for a number of reasons including: navigation, farming, self-discovery, ect. In my opinion, the cosmos are extremely underrated and should be studied much more by society. You may not learn about astrology in school, but there are thousands of knowledge-filled websites and books just waiting to be explored. If you’ve been trucking along your path to self-discovery then you’ve probably already checked out your natal chart; if not, I think you’ll be pleased on how much insight it might bring you. If you’re just now dipping your toes in the cleansing water of self-discovery, then I’m sure you’re feeling eager to discover more! By any means, I offer you good luck on your journey.

Namaste’ friends!-Katherine Kell
